Connor McDavid makes history again.
The Edmonton Oilers have certainly done their job to stave off elimination in the Stanley Cup Final. They dominated the Florida Panthers in Game 4, and Connor McDavid made history. Edmonton’s captain provided the assist on Dylan Holloway’s goal to make it 7-1. As a result, he has surpassed Wayne Gretzky for the all-time record for most assists in a single postseason.
McDavid was a star for Edmonton in a do-or-die Game 4. The Oilers captain scored a goal in the second period in addition to his three assists on the night. McDavid now has six goals and 38 points to this point in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Edmonton also received a major effort from Holloway and goalie Stuart Skinner. Holloway scored two goals on the night while adding an assist. Meanwhile, Skinner was an unmoveable force in between the pipes. He made 32 saves on 33 shots against as he helped the Oilers cruise to an 8-1 victory over the Panthers in Game 4.
Connor McDavid continues historic postseason

McDavid entered the Stanley Cup Final with a real chance at breaking a few records. He was only six assists away from breaking the all-time single postseason assist record before Saturday night. Additionally, he had an outside chance of setting a new all-time single postseason record for most points.
McDavid is unlikely to break that record unless the series goes to seven games. However, he does have a legitimate chance of reaching a major milestone. The Edmonton captain can become the third 40+ postseason point scorer in NHL history in Game 5. He would become the first player to record 40+ points in a single postseason since 1993 if he achieves the feat.
McDavid is having a run that we seldom see in the NHL anymore. And while his team is down, they certainly aren’t out of it just yet. If the Oilers are going to complete the comeback, McDavid is going to be a catalyst for that effort.
Oilers live to fight another game
Edmonton looked lifeless for most of the first two games of the Stanley Cup Final. However, something seemed to click in the third period of Game 3. The Oilers nearly came back from 4-1 down to force an overtime period. The Panthers kept them at bay, but the momentum obviously carried over to Game 4.
Edmonton is still in a very deep hole. They have no margin for error moving forward against Florida. The Oilers must win each of their next three games to win the Stanley Cup. A loss will see their season end and the Cup remain south of the border. It’s a lot of pressure, certainly, but it’s somewhat familiar territory for this team.
Edmonton cruised through the first round against the Los Angeles Kings. However, they fell into a 3-2 series deficit against the Vancouver Canucks in round two. It was a close series, but the Oilers were able to defeat their Western Canadian rivals in seven games. In the Western Conference Finals, the Oilers were down 2-1 to the Dallas Stars before winning in six games.
No team wants to be in this position. Even the slightest stumble the rest of the way could end the Oilers’ season. That said, if there is a team that can manage the pressure, Edmonton has proven they can. Let’s see if Connor McDavid can lead his team to another crucial win in Game 5 on Tuesday night.
