One of the Buffalo Bills’ biggest offseason additions may not even make it to Week 1
After a third straight loss in the AFC Divisional Round, the Buffalo Bills decided to rebuild their offense. They bid farewell to their top two wideouts in Stefon Diggs (traded to the Houston Texans) and Gabe Davis (signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars) and released Pro Bowl center Mitch Morse.
GM Brandon Beane used the No. 33 pick on Florida State receiver signed veteran wideouts Curtis Samuel, Chase Claypool and two-time Super Bowl champion Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
But according to a report from Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic, MVS has struggled mightily in training camp and is in danger of being cut:
“To begin training camp, the Bills appeared to have a pretty well-defined top five of the wide receiver group. That included Keon Coleman, Khalil Shakir, Curtis Samuel, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Mack Hollins.
But as camp has gone on, there are clear signs that the top five may only be four, with Valdes-Scantling needing to battle his way back into it. Valdes-Scantling has faded into the background in the last few practices. He has yet to make a strong impression in the passing game during team drills, and his opportunities with quarterback Josh Allen and the top unit have dwindled.”
Valdes-Scantling signed a one-year deal with the Bills worth a max value of $4.5 million following his release from the Kansas City Chiefs. MVS signed with KC in 2022 free agency and helped them to consecutive Super Bowl championships.
The Chiefs also decided to shake up their wide receiver room, signing former Baltimore Ravens first-round pick Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown before using their first-round pick on Texas speedster Xavier Worthy.
In 16 games with the Chiefs last season, Valdes-Scantling caught 21 passes for 315 yards and one touchdown. His best season came in 2020, when MVS caught 33 passes for 690 yards and six TDs.
Only time will tell if Buffalo’s bold decision to shake up the wide receiver room will work. But one thing was obvious: Beane and Sean McDermott had to try something new after yet another postseason letdown.
Buffalo Bills Open 2024 vs. Arizona Cardinals
The new-look Bills will try to start the new season on a high note when they host Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1.
After that, Josh Allen and his Bills will travel to South Beach for the first of two regular season meetings with the AFC East rival Miami Dolphins in a “Thursday Night Football” clash.
