With a powerful performance and the song “Lose yourself” by rapper Eminem, Alex Hartung from Bremen thrilled the jury at the casting show “The Voice auf Germany” at his audition.

“During my performance during the ‘Blind Auditions’, I didn’t see anything, not even the camera,” says Alex Hartung. “Musically, it was the most beautiful moment in my life so far.” When all the jury chairs had turned to him at the end of his song, he first thought the technology was broken. But the Bremen native had scored points with all five jury stars and was brought into their team by the band members of the “Fantastic Four”. “It’s the coolest feeling when you can reach someone with your music,” says the singer.

His coaches, Smudo and Michi from the German hip-hop group “Die Fantastischen Vier”, are “very cool”, and the studio band of thoroughbred musicians is also “incredible”, says Alex Hartung. “The Voice is not an 08/15 casting show,” he knows, “you are treated as a musician and a human being.” All “Voice” talents live in the same hotel. There they prepare for the “Battles”, in which singers from the same team compete against each other. On “The Voice of Germany”, no one asks about their private life or whether they don’t like one of the other “Voice” participants. The Bremen native was amazed at how much contact you actually have with the stars. They are present at the rehearsal and give tips wherever they can. “It’s a real togetherness, from the make-up to the cameraman,” says Hartung. “I’m grateful for what happened. Everything that comes now is just an increase.”

Music has moved further into the focus for the student teacher (German and sports) through “The Voice”. Now it’s time to keep practicing. “I only partly believe in talent,” says Hartung, “as in sports, it’s mainly a lot of work.” The Bremen-Norder took his first musical steps three years ago. In a soundproofed closet, he recorded his first rap pieces. “I bought a lot of large egg cartons in the supermarket for it, but in the end I preferred to use foam,” he says with a laugh. When his friends reacted “surprisingly positively”, Alex Hartung dared to make his first appearances.

He has prepared intensively for “The Voice of Germany”. “When I finally stood on stage, I felt nothing but pure joy.”

Hartung sees his musical career as relaxed. “I just enjoy it, I have an education that I can fall back on, and I don’t have to bend over backwards on stage.” He wants to offer positive hip-hop: without clichés, hate slogans or “gangsta rap”.

In order to progress in the show, Alex must now survive the battles. Today he sings against the 36-year-old teammate “Blue MC” from Berlin.
