Ryan Reynolds shared a piece of advice that “stuck” with him.

The Deadpool actor believes it’s crucial for his children to understand that he experiences losses as well as victories. Ryan shared four children with wife and actress Blake Lively – Betty, 4, Ines, 7, and James, 9, and a one-year-old whose name or gender has yet to be revealed.

In a conversation with fellow actor Hugh Jackman, Ryan shared some valuable parenting advice he received from ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ director Shawn Levy.

In the PEOPLE interview, he said: “Shawn Levy actually told me something that stuck with me forever, that people tend to only talk about their wins. But I think it’s really important for your kids in particular to know that you lose.”

He continued: “You don’t get what you want all the time. Something you worked on really hard didn’t work. You feel like you said something embarrassing today, you did something that didn’t sit right with you. It’s just so important that [your kids] see that and they don’t just hear, ‘Oh Dad nailed it.’ Because you lose so much more than you win.” He added: “It’s really stuck with me.”

The ‘Free Guy’ star also opened up about how dealing with anxiety has been beneficial in his parenting journey and in relating to his children. He shared that he “loves” having anxiety because when he witnesses his kids experience something like it, he knows how to handle it “in a way that is compassionate, that actually allows them to feel seen.” He understand that he can’t fix it but he could communicate with them about it, something he is grateful for.

Ryan Reynolds has found that his personal battles with anxiety have not only aided him in parenting but also enhanced his career.

The Hollywood star explained: “My job benefits greatly. People who have anxiety are constantly thinking into the future. You’re constantly: ‘What if this happens? What if that happens? ‘ You’re always telling yourself stories. So when we’re shooting ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’, I’m not just shooting the movie, I’m also sitting in the audience as a cautious critic going: ‘I don’t like that. I don’t buy that.’ So anxiety creates that ecosystem of awareness that I wouldn’t otherwise [have].”
