A former colleague of Huw Edwards has admitted there had been concerns over his private life in recent years while following speculation about his actions
Huw Edwards’ former colleague has admitted there had been concerns about his private life.
The disgraced broadcaster who fronted some of the most historical news moments of the century today pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. During an appearance at Westminster Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 31 July, he faced charges of seven Category A, the worst category, 12 Category B, and 22 Category C indecent images of children. He now faces a maximum of ten years in prison.
However, a former colleague opened up, claiming there had been concerns about his private life after following speculation about his actions last year. Sir Craig Oliver who edited the Ten O’Clock News and Six O’Clock News during Edwards’ time on the programmes said the broadcaster often clashed with colleagues.
Last year, Huw’s ex-wife Vicky Flind announced Edwards was the BBC presenter at the centre of a scandal after The Sun revealed an unknown presenter had paid a teenager more than £35,000 since they were 17 in exchange for images. The young person stated that nothing inappropriate or illegal happened at the time.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s World At One, Sir Craig, said: “When I was working with Huw which is well over 10 years ago now there wasn’t gossip about his private life then, but as the years have passed and as it got closer to the initial complaint that was made about him, there was gossip about his private life, what was going on.
“There were also, I think, a number of people who were worried about his behaviour within the BBC – was he actually throwing his weight around and behaving well enough to other staff? But I don’t think anybody suspected that there was child abuse imagery in his private life in any way, shape or form.”
The BBC has since condemned Edwards’ behaviour and insisted that if he had been charged during his time employed at the license-payer-funded corporation, he would have been sacked. In a statement, a spokesperson for the Beebs said:”The BBC is shocked to hear the details which have emerged in court today. There can be no place for such abhorrent behaviour and our thoughts are with all those affected.
“The police have confirmed that the charges are not connected to the original complaint raised with the BBC in the summer of 2023, nevertheless in the interests of transparency we think it important to set out some points about events of the last year.
“In November 2023, whilst Mr Edwards was suspended, the BBC as his employer at the time was made aware in confidence that he had been arrested on suspicion of serious offences and released on bail whilst the police continued their investigation. At the time, no charges had been brought against Mr Edwards and the BBC had also been made aware of significant risk to his health
“Today we have learnt of the conclusion of the police process in the details as presented to the court. If at any point during the period Mr Edwards was employed by the BBC he had been charged, the BBC had determined it would act immediately to dismiss him. In the end, at the point of charge, he was no longer an employee of the BBC. During this period, in the usual way, the BBC has kept its corporate management of these issues separate from its independent editorial functions. We want to reiterate our shock at Mr Edwards’ actions and our thoughts remain with all those affected.”
In a previous statement, Vicky said: “In light of the recent reporting regarding the ‘BBC Presenter’ I am making this statement on behalf of my husband Huw Edwards, after what have been five extremely difficult days for our family. I am doing this primarily out of concern for his mental well-being and to protect our children.
“Huw is suffering from serious mental health issues. As is well documented, he has been treated for severe depression in recent years. The events of the last few days have greatly worsened matters, he has suffered another serious episode and is now receiving in-patient hospital care where he’ll stay for the foreseeable future.
“Once well enough to do so, he intends to respond to the stories that have been published. To be clear Huw was first told that there were allegations being made against him last Thursday. In the circumstances and given Huw’s condition I would like to ask that the privacy of my family and everyone else caught up in these upsetting events is respected.
“I know that Huw is deeply sorry that so many colleagues have been impacted by the recent media speculation. We hope this statement will bring that to an end.”
