As the NBA free agency period draws near, uncertainty surrounds Klay Thompson’s future with the Golden State Warriors. Despite the team’s reported interest in retaining him, there has been no formal contract offer extended to the veteran guard, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
“There’s been no productive discussion between the Warriors and Thompson or his representatives. Talks are essentially frozen. With free agency now less than 10 days away, Thompson’s exit from the only franchise he has ever known feels closer and more probable than ever before,” Slater reported.
This situation has raised speculation that Thompson’s departure from the Warriors, the only NBA team he has ever played for, is increasingly likely.
The Warriors’ front office faces the challenge of bringing the team’s payroll under the luxury tax’s stringent second apron. Thompson’s return to Golden State may hinge on his willingness to accept a hometown discount.
If Thompson does indeed depart, it would mark the end of an era for the 34-year-old, who signed a landmark $190 million contract with the Warriors back in July 2019.
Meanwhile, Thompson is expected to draw considerable interest from several NBA teams with ample cap space. Potential suitors reportedly eyeing Thompson include the Orlando Magic, the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Philadelphia 76ers.
Klay Thompson’s Struggling Last Season
Since returning from consecutive ACL and Achilles injuries, Klay Thompson has faced significant challenges. These injuries kept him under for nearly three years and have noticeably impacted his on-court performance.
During the 2023–24 NBA season, Thompson’s role with the Warriors evolved significantly. Initially struggling to find his form, he was moved to the bench for the first time in his career. Later, he eventually reclaimed a spot in the starting lineup.
But he failed to keep up his momentum. Thompson’s struggles were noteworthy in a pivotal moment during the play-in tournament, where he went scoreless in a 118-94 loss to the Sacramento Kings. This marked the first time since his rookie season that Thompson failed to score in a game.
Thompson ended the season averaging 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.
