Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon said rookie sensation Caitlin Clark is not too shy as far as trash-talking is concerned as the Indiana Fever guard can throw one with the best of them.
Speaking with media ahead of the Aces’ game against the Chicago Sky on Thursday, Hammon, joined by former teammate and now Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon, revealed that Clark is not one to just sit down and take smack talk from others.
Citing Clark’s rivalry with fellow rookie Angel Reese (Chicago) to make her point, the two-time WNBA champion coach said:
“At the end of the day, they are super skilled, they’re fun to watch, and they jaw at each other. People be like, ‘Oh, Angel’s talking and I’m like, no one talks more crap than Caitlin, too!

“It’s just a different generation. I think we talked subtly while they be talking in your face. But let them go. They’re big girls.”
Becky Hammon and the Aces went on to defeat Reese and the Sky, 95-83, for their third straight victory and improve to a 9-6 record for the season.
A’ja Wilson led Las Vegas in the victory, finishing with 31 points, to go along with six rebounds. three assists, two steals and two blocks. Jackie Young and Kelsey Plum backstopped her with 22 and 21 points, respectively.
For the Sky (6-10), it was Marina Mabrey who top-scored with 21 points followed by Chennedy Carter with 20. Reese, for her part, had a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Las Vegas plays the backend of its two-game road trip on Saturday against the Washington Mystics.
Becky Hammon high on Aces rookie Kate Martin
Apart from Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, Becky Hammon is also raving about the play of their rookie Kate Martin, who has become an important player in the Las Vegas Aces’ rotation.
Selected in the second round and 18th overall in this year’s WNBA rookie draft out of the University of Iowa, Martin has been steady for the two-time defending league champions.
She has been averaging 3.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 17 minutes of play. But beyond the numbers, her overall court sense has added another dimension to the Aces’ offense.
It is something not lost to Becky Hammon, who spoke highly of Martin in a report that came out on Heavy.com, saying:
“Her mind jumps off the pages. I said early on she’s a basketball player. If you don’t know what that means, then you should watch her. She is somebody who understands angles. Being in the right place at the right time and making the right read — and she’s just getting her feet wet.”
In the Aces’ 95-83 road win over the Chicago Sky on Thursday, Martin played seven minutes and had one three-pointer.
