SUMMARY

The diverse powers from Devil Fruits in One Piece make predicting abilities a gamble, with some being overlooked due to user weaknesses.
Haki is another major source of power in One Piece, essential for survival in the New World, although some users fail to maximize its potential.
Underrated Devil Fruits like Foxy’s Slow-Slow fruit or Wapol’s Munch-Munch fruit have immense potential in the hands of more powerful users.

The greatest strength of One Piece is the diverse powers available to characters through Devil Fruits. Predicting what new abilities will pop up in a given story arc is a total gamble due to the wide berth of what they can do. Of course, with so many Devil Fruits, it’s easy to forget some that are incredibly powerful. There are a lot of factors for why that is, of course.

The other major source of “supernatural” power in One Piece is Haki, the mysterious life force that is essential to survive in the New World.

It could be that the users themselves are weak, cowardly, or can’t use the ability to their full potential for some reason. Others may be very powerful, but suffer from critical weaknesses that make them seem impractical. Some fruits are just not explored in the the story, or are entirely squandered by poor users.

10Captain Foxy’s Slow-Slow Fruit

A Powerful Fruit for a Dastardly Cheat

Captain Foxy using his Slow-Slow Fruit against Luffy in One Piece

Captain Foxy goes under the radar for most fans because of his lack of cool looks and overall being more interested in playing the Davy Back Fight over becoming King of the Pirates. But don’t underestimate the Slow-Slow fruit, because in more competent hands it’d be incredibly dangerous. The power to slow anyone at will is an exceptional one.

While Foxy obviously lacks the sheer power that Luffy has, his use of trickery is enough to put them on almost even ground. If Foxy had a bit more grit and determination to make himself stronger and master Haki in tandem with his fruit, he could be one of the trickiest fighters on the whole Grand Line – but he seems more content to keep playing the Davy Back Fight instead rather than having any bigger aspirations.

9Kelly Funk’s Jacket-Jacket Fruit

Silly Power Could Be Deadly in the Right Hands

The Jacket-Jacket Fruit is pretty odd in concept. Those who eat it can turn into a ‘jacket’ that can be worn by others, essentially letting them combine their powers. Kelly Funk is brash and short, while his brother Bobby Funk is meek and big – so by being worn by Bobby, Kelly can bring his fighting spirit while using his brother’s body.

The Funk brothers are clearly inspired by legendary pro wrestlers Terry Funk and Dory Funk Jr.

But what if a more powerful person had the Jacket-Jacket Fruit? There are plenty of individuals who are exceptionally powerful yet lack Devil Fruits, such as Garp or Zoro. One of them getting the Jacket-Jacket Fruit and being worn by someone else similar in power could increase their power exponentially, not to mention if those wearing them also had Devil Fruits of their own! The combination powers are almost limitless, which makes this fruit totally underrated.

8Machvise’s Ton-Ton Fruit

Crushing Power that’s Horribly Underrated

Machvise crushes Hajrudin the giant's leg with the Ton-Ton Fruit in One Piece.

Early on in the Grand Line, the Straw Hats encountered Miss Valentine of Baroque Works, user of the Kilo-Kilo Fruit, letting her increase her weight up to a thousand pounds without increasing her size or mobility. But Machvise of the Donquixote Pirates has an even stronger ability with the Ton-Ton Fruit, letting him increase his weight by metric tons.

Machvise hardly uses this power for creative purposes, though. His main attack is to ascend high in the air and then crush his opponents by multiplying his weight in the free fall. While undoubtedly effective, even breaking the bones of the giant Hajrudin, Machvise ultimately doesn’t use it in many other creative ways. This makes it somewhat forgettable despite the power it clearly displays. In the right hands the Ton-Ton fruit would be devastating, but those hands just don’t belong to Machvise.

7Wapol’s Munch-Munch Fruit

Enough to Turn a Man from Rags to Riches

The fruit allows Wapol to eat literally anything – and to combine whatever he eats to make something new.

Wapol was the king of the Drum Kingdom before the Straw Hats kicked him out and made him lose everything. But his Munch-Munch Fruit helped him pull back from his massive loss. The fruit allows Wapol to eat literally anything – and to combine whatever he eats to make something new. This even includes living things, as he combines his two strongest soldiers into one super soldier.

Though he later discovered its mightiest power through a cover story – using his ability to create toys out of garbage, Wapol discovered a brand-new metal that only he could make through his combination powers, ‘Wapometal.’ This was enough to propel him to be the CEO of an immense toy company and get his hands on a new Kingdom. Even Franky swears by Wapometal for his ‘General Franky’ form, a testament to the power the fruit can facilitate. The Munch-Munch Fruit’s power might not make Wapol a physical powerhouse, but it has the power to build empires.

6Smiley’s Sala-Sala Fruit, Model: Axolotl

Toxic Lizard Barely Showed Off Its Abilities

Smiley, the poisonous blob that looks like an Axolotl with the Sala-Sala Fruit, in One Piece.

Only a few objects were fed Devil Fruits throughout One Piece, and the one that gets seen the least is Smiley. A cognizant blob of poison in the form of an axolotl, Smiley soon meets his end once Caesar Clown transforms him into a truly deadly poison gas to flood Punk-Hazard with. The fruit is regenerated nearby, revealing for the first time one of the biggest Devil Fruit secrets, but is never recovered.

While little is seen of the fruit’s power, it’s likely to be pretty adaptable. Smiley reached a gigantic size and showed incredible regeneration skills, just like a real axolotl. While mostly speculation, one can only wonder what sort of abilities the fruit could bestow on a user, and they’re likely all quite useful. Alas, poor Smiley just couldn’t live in the world, which both leaves a more detailed power set to the imagination and the fruit being forgotten.

5Shinobu’s Ripe-Ripe Fruit

Time Accelerating Fruit is Unimaginably Good

Shinobu uses Ripe-Ripe Fruit in One Piece to make wood rot.

Shinobu’s fruit makes her the unsung hero of Wano, by far. The effect of the Ripe-Ripe fruit is to age anything the user wishes to age, and that means anything. While Shinobu uses it on non-living things to make the environment decay to her advantage, it also works on living people, and unlike Jewelry Bonney’s similar fruit, these effects cannot be simply resisted or undone. Once a person or thing is aged by the power, they’re not going to get any younger.

While Shinobu mainly used that ability on Momonosuke, making him age from a young boy into an adult and letting him take on a massive dragon form that could rival Kaido’s in size. She never uses this specific ability on anyone else in combat, but if she got close enough, she could’ve aged Kaido into dust, even if his strong Haki would have likely protected him from the effect. Ultimately, Shinobu’s fruit goes overlooked, as she never uses it in this manner against her foes – perhaps she doesn’t like it morally.

4Chief Warden Magellan’s Venom-Venom Fruit

Toxic Powers Strong Enough to Stop Luffy

The Venom-Venom Fruit is truly a fearsome power, one that goes unrecognized in the wake of other powers like the Admiral’s Logia fruit. The Chief Warden of Impel Down, Magellan, used it to terrifying effect during Luffy’s break-in to the great prison. The venomous assault even completely took down the rubbery pirate, possibly shaving decades off Luffy’s life in the process.

However, Magellan’s ultimately held back by his venom’s own potency. His poison gives him horrible stomach trouble that keeps him in the bathroom for ten hours a day, stopping him from maximizing the fruit’s strength. If it was in the hands of a more iron-stomached individual, the Venom-Venom Fruit might reach entire new heights of power. But as it is, Magellan still makes excellent use of the fruit, which only goes underrated due to his toilet troubles.

3Sugar’s Hobby-Hobby Fruit

The Key to Donquixote Doflamingo’s Power

Sugar Sugar using the Hobby-Hobby Fruit Sugar's Hobby-Hobby Fruit Sugar's toysSugar Sugar using the Hobby-Hobby Fruit Sugar's Hobby-Hobby Fruit Sugar's toys

The people of Dressrosa lived in a twisted illusion under Doflamingo’s reign, as toys walked the streets at day, and everything seemed joyous. Little did they know that they were under the effects of Sugar’s Hobby-Hobby Fruit, who had turned all the dissenters into toys, and made the world forget about that person with the same blow. With a single touch, it’s like the person never existed.

The only counter there is to the Hobby-Hobby Fruit is that knocking the user out would release everyone under its influence, returning both lives and memories in the process. The Hobby-Hobby Fruit keeps Sugar a child no matter how old she gets, so this is not too tall of a task in itself, but the rest of the Donquixote Pirates will likely make it a much more difficult feat to pull off. The Hobby-Hobby fruit is an immensely strong ability because of how much influence it can hold over people, but goes overlooked, likely because it’s not that cool to see in action.

2Smoothie’s Wring-Wring Fruit

The Sweet Commander’s Squeezing Might

Charlotte Smoothie of the Big Mom Pirates squeezes a Giraffe with the Wring-Wring Fruit in One Piece.

The Big Mom Pirates have three of their ranks who stand above all the rest – the Sweet Commanders. These are Katakuri, Oven, and Cracker. Katakuri shows off his mochi powers in a fierce battle with Luffy, and Cracker can create and manipulate near-indestructible buiscuits. Smoothie’s fruit is the Wring-Wring fruit, and it’s shown to be just as powerful… but it’s barely seen at all.

Other than its outlandish capacity to ‘juice’ anything, it seems to offer Smoothie a great deal of versatility, from being able to wring poison from her body to enhancing her body to gigantic proportions by draining the liquids of those around her. The only problem is, she mostly fought the Straw Hats as they attempted to flee in the Thousand Sunny, giving her little time to actually display her true power. That makes this fruit’s strength more implied than actually seen, and is overshadowed by her brother’s Devil Fruits.

1Kurozimi Orochi’s Snake-Snake Fruit, Model: Yamata-No-Orochi

An Exceptionally Powerful Fruit for a Sniveling Coward

Kurozimi Orochi was fittingly given the Snake-Snake Fruit, Model: Yamata-No-Orochi, to help him ascend to a seat of power over Wano. This fruit gave him the power to become the eight-headed serpent of myth, but it was truly only a cheap way to prevent him from being almost completely hapless. In a real fight against actual combatants, Shogun Orochi is still pretty sad.

The main way Orochi uses his fruit is to cheat death, which allows the cruel king to evade an early demise at Kaido’s hands, and escape with several more lives left. But eventually, all his heads were rightfully chopped off. It was a power that the cowardly Shogun didn’t deserve nor utilize to its full power, making it easily an underrated fruit by association, and perhaps one of the most wasted fruits in the whole of One Piece.
