Many believe this could be Joe Flacco’s last year in the NFL at 39 years old. However, even as an aging backup, he has found a way to completely change one of the most important aspects of football.
That, of course, is the cleat that every player wears in every game. However, he isn’t turning heads with some new style but rather a cleat that could significantly reduce ankle injuries, which have become increasingly common with artificial turf.
Flacco is wearing cleats from Caddix, a company that claims to have produced a cleat that should lower the risk of ACL, MCL, and high ankle sprain injuries.
Caddix claims that turf is the site of more injuries because it has a much higher breaking point than natural grass, meaning your foot is more likely to get caught and twisted in turf.
Caddix has developed a technology called SmartStuds, which should help with the problem. “The shift Caddix SmartStudsTM make under stress is monumental in reducing torque, but subtle enough to be imperceptible to the athlete counting on them for the traction they need,” wrote Caddix.
It is a small sample size, but if the technology does what it has shown to do, then these cleats could become extremely popular among NFL players and not just Flacco.
Joe Flacco “Grateful” To Be On The Colts
Even if Flacco is the backup behind second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson, it’s a petition he’s comfortable with.
“It was obviously a little bit different than last offseason, when I didn’t get any calls at all,” he told NFL media. “But even this offseason, I wasn’t really sure how it was going to go. It wasn’t like I played a ton of games last year or anything like that, but definitely grateful for Indy to reach out and have this as an opportunity.”
The former Super Bowl MVP and 2023 AP Comeback Player of the Year seems content with where he’s at in his career.
