The tense interview lasted for two segments as New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu attempted to defend his support of Donald Trump.
The ladies of Hot Topics held Governor Chris Sununu to the fire over his support for Donald Trump during a tense interview Thursday on The View.
One year after the New Hampshire politician was booed by The View audience during a May 2023 appearance on the long-running talk show, Sununu returned to the Hot Topics table to break down the election landscape that, in his estimation, saw Democrats forcing Vice President Kamala Harris into place as the likely Democratic nominee in place of President Joe Biden on the ballot.
“The Democrat voters all voted for Joe Biden, and then a couple of elites [pushed Harris],” Sununu said during the discussion, which legal expert Sunny Hostin quickly pushed back on. “They voted for Harris, too. She was on the ticket,” Hostin reminded him.

“But, they voted for Biden to be president, and then it wasn’t like it was sent to the convention and then the delegates had a choice or anything like that,” Sununu speculated. When Hostin pointed out that Harris has the likely support of over 2,000 delegates, Sununu doubled down.
“Guys, look, three phone calls were made from [Chuck] Schumer and [Nancy] Pelosi. Biden said, ‘I’m in this thing, I’m not leaving,’ a couple phone calls are made, and all of a sudden he’s pushed out, and in 48 hours all the delegates aren’t given a choice of other candidates, they’re told, ‘You’re going to get behind Kamala,'” Sununu claimed.
This prompted moderator Whoopi Goldberg to step in, firmly reminding Sununu, “That’s actually not what happened,” and that “the other choices decided she was the best choice” to run. Goldberg cited others’ lack of interest in challenging Harris for the nomination — including California’s governor, Gavin Newsom — as evidence that the party was behind her by choice, not obligation.
“The voters have to decide,” Sununu stressed. “Voters decide, not elites.”
Goldberg cut in again, sternly urging Sununu to “stop calling them elites.” Sununu relented, shifting his descriptor to “insiders” instead.
Later, Joy Behar and Hostin grilled Sununu on his support for Trump and the former president’s controversial policies and ethics, which Behar estimated are “more un-American than worrying about inflation” and the economy.
Recalling Sununu’s May 2023 appearance on the show, The View‘s audience audibly booed after he suggested that “a lot of people would tell you that they could pay their bills” under Trump’s first term, or that “we weren’t talking about defunding the police” under his administration.
“Let me ask you about disqualifiers, right? Being convicted of 34 felonies is not a disqualifier for you. Being indicted four times? Not a disqualifier for you. Found liable for sexual abuse? Not a disqualifier for you,” Hostin asked, and Sununu nodded in agreement after each point she made. He responded to Hostin’s inquiry, telling her that the insinuation was insulting to “half of the votes” in the nation that will go to Trump in November, and that she shouldn’t judge those Americans “because they have a different set of priorities” than her.
Finally, the group sparred over inflation, after Sununu lamented the fact that, as he estimated, a family of four can’t eat at McDonald’s for under $50 due to inflation.
“The government doesn’t control what your grocery prices are,” Goldberg later said, though Sununu dug his heels in: “Inflation is caused by one thing. The government prints and spends too much money. It’s Economics 101.”
Though the group wasn’t able to come to an agreement on much during the discussion, Goldberg had to cut the chat off and throw the show to a break as Sununu departed.
The moment capped a stacked week for The View, which also hosted everything from Goldberg expressing disgust over Trump’s recent interview with the National Association of Black Journalists to Behar saying she needed a séance to communicate with her dead friends.
The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/PT on ABC.
