Fans weigh in on Caitlin Clark’s 19-assist game vs Angel Reese’s 15 consecutive double-double record after Robert Griffin III’s poll stirs debate (Image credit: IMAGN)
Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky rookie sensations Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese each made history ahead of the WNBA’s month-long Olympic break. Afterward, former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III polled fans on which player’s milestone was more impressive, sparking a lively debate.
During Indiana’s 101-93 road loss to the Dallas Wings on Wednesday, Clark tallied a WNBA record 19 assists. She surpassed ex-Chicago star guard Courtney Vandersloot’s record of 18 assists. Vandersloot reached the mark on Aug. 31, 2020, and in the playoffs on Sept. 28, 2021.

Clark’s record-breaking evening came days after Reese’s historic double-double streak concluded. Reese recorded 15 consecutive double-doubles from June 4 to July 11. She surpassed two-time MVP Candace Parker, who tallied 12 straight double-doubles from 2009 to 2010.
Reese came up just shy of extending her double-double streak to 16 games on Saturday. She amassed eight points and 16 rebounds in the Sky’s 81-67 home loss to the New York Liberty. However, her historic streak of consecutive games with double-digit rebounds is still active at 18 games and counting.
Clark and Reese are already two of the league’s biggest names, each getting selected as All-Stars as rookies. Meanwhile, they are essentially the lone candidates vying for this year’s Rookie of the Year award. Thus, fans began using their records as arguments for their respective ROY cases.
Griffin added fuel to the Clark vs. Reese debate on Wednesday by polling WNBA fans on X/Twitter about which record was more impressive. After nearly 10,000 votes, the results heavily leaned in Clark’s favor, with 77.5% of fans choosing her 19-assist record.
Meanwhile, several fans accused Reese of stat padding to achieve 15 consecutive double-doubles.
“Caitlin Clark can’t pass to herself for the assist. Angel and her rebounds on the other hand …,” @TheTealMustang said.
“Angel Reese had at least five games during the streak where she stat padded at the end of games. Clark gets her stats within the competitive nature of the game,” @JobberNationTV said.
“Stat padding doesn’t count,” @BillyMcDonald2 said.
Nevertheless, 22.5% of fans were still more impressed with Reese’s double-double record.
“Both these records are impressive in their own right, but I gotta give the edge to Angel Reese’s 15 consecutive double-doubles. Getting a double-double shows consistency and dominance in both scoring and rebounding, night in and night out,” @Meekdogg said.
“Reese, not even close,” @ThaHumbleGod said.
Caitlin Clark primed to make more history after WNBA’s Olympic break
While the WNBA season is on hiatus for the next month, Caitlin Clark appears primed to continue making history shortly after the league’s resumption.
Following Wednesday’s 19-assist outing, Clark has 213 assists for the season. Per ESPN, she is 12 assists shy of ex-WNBA star guard Ticha Penicheiro’s rookie record of 225 assists set in 1998 with the now-disbanded Sacramento Monarchs.
So, assuming she stays healthy, Clark should blow that mark out of the water.
