The former goaltender Jean-Sébastien Giguère called out Connor McDavid for snubbing the Conn-Smythe Trophy following the Oilers’ tough loss in game 7 against the Florida Panthers.
For the first time since 2003, and for the sixth time in NHL history, a member of the losing team in the Finals won the MVP award. Connor McDavid deserved that title, as he led the NHL in points, and broke a record from Wayne Gretzky.
However, McDavid caused a bit of a stir when he won the award. He didn’t show up on the ice to get it:
Ex-goalie Jean-Sébastien Giguère, who was the last member of a losing team to win the Conn-Smythe, shared his thoughts about McDavid’s decision to stay in the locker room after the tough loss.
Here’s what he said:
It should be an obligation to show up and accept the trophy, it’s a question of respect.
It is similar to the handshake.
The game gives us so much, we should give back, and showing respect to the trophy is part of it. -J.S. Giguere
Players show up to get trophies at the annual award ceremony. Why should this trophy be different?
Even if they don’t want to be there, players who can show sportsmanship in defeats are a much better example:
“How much you wanna bet Giguère wanted to be anywhere else in the world at this moment rather than accepting this award? This is what class, character, and sportsmanship is.
McDavid no-showed the Conn Smythe like a tantruming child, just like he no-showed game 6 & 7”
Do you think Connor McDavid lacked class by not showing up on the ice to get the Trophy?
