The high school quarterback in Alabama tragically died after suffering a brain injury during a football game on Friday night.
Caden Tellier, a junior, suffered a brain injury while attempting to make a tackle during the third quarter of Morgan Academy’s first game of the season against Southern Academy, according to Michael McLendon, the executive director of the Alabama Independent School Association.
The hit was so vicious that he had to be taken off the field and to a local hospital in critical condition.
The Selma Times-Journal further described the scene as a “scary moment” when the teen got injured on the field, as the game was delayed while he was being treated and taken off in an ambulance.
School officials later revealed that Caden Tellier did not survive.
Tellier, who local outlet WFSA reports was 16 years old, “suffered a traumatic brain injury,” according to a GoFundMe and Facebook posts shared by the school itself and the Alabama Independent School Association.
“There are no words to describe how we feel as a school community and family,” Dr. Bryan Oliver, headmaster for Morgan Academy, said in a statement. “We will come together and support Jamie, Arsella and Lyla with our whole hearts. We offer our deepest sympathy to the Tellier’s extended family as well.”
TMZ said Caden Tellier had 1,228 passing yards and seven touchdowns during the 2023 season.
In addition to being a star on the football field, he also played baseball and recorded a .311 batting average.
A service will be scheduled soon, the Tellier family said. Morgan Academy school officials have suspended all school activities this week.
