As expected, boxer Imane Khelif defeated Chinese boxer Yang Liu to become the first Algerian female boxer to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing.

“I am a woman like any other woman,” boxer Imane Khelif said at a press conference after winning the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the early morning of August 10.

The final match of the women’s 66kg category was completely in favor of Imane Khelif as she easily won with an absolute score of 5-0 against Yang Liu (China). All 5 judges present in this match gave Imane Khelif a score of 10-9 in each round.

Before the final, Imane Khelif, along with Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu Ting, were caught up in a storm that dominated the headlines and became the subject of heated debate on social media platforms about their true gender.

Both were disqualified from the 2023 world championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) , citing XY male sex chromosome testing and ruling both ineligible to compete.

But Imane Khelif and Lin Yu Ting will still be able to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) stripped the IBA of its status as the sport’s governing body in 2023 and took over boxing in Paris.

At these Games, the IOC will apply the same boxing eligibility rules that applied at the 2016 and 2021 Games, including no gender testing.

The IOC has rejected the test results requested by the IBA for Khelif and Lin Yu Ting, saying there was no reason to conduct the tests.

That’s why Imane Khelif has the chance to win an Olympic gold medal and become the first Algerian woman to win this title at the Olympics. The boxer born in 1999 is also the first Algerian boxer to win a gold medal since Hocine Soltani at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta (USA).

“I was born a woman and I have lived as a woman but success always has enemies and they cannot deny my success. That also gives my success a special flavor.

This is my dream. I am an Olympic champion, a gold medalist. I am so happy. 8 years of hard work to get to this day.

“8 years without sleep and 8 years of fatigue, now I am the Olympic champion. I am very happy. I want to thank everyone who came to support me. Everyone, Algeria, and everyone, Paris”, Imane Khelif shared her joy after the victory.

The Algerian boxer also confirmed that the suspicions about her sexuality in recent days were all baseless rumors. She said: “Everything people say about me on social media is immoral. I want to change the thinking of people around the world.

Since 2018, I have been competing under the IBA and they know everything about me. Some members hate me and I don’t know why. Today I sent them a message that my honor comes first.”

The 25-year-old has always received huge crowds at her fights, with Algerian fans, many of them women, flocking to Roland Garros and the North Paris Arena to cheer on Imane Khelif.

“Algerian women are known for their courage. The presence of these women at the stadium sends a message to the world that our honor comes first,” Imane Khelif concluded./.
