Zach Collins Faces Key Season with San Antonio Spurs to Secure Future Role
Zach Collins, the towering center for the San Antonio Spurs, finds himself at a pivotal juncture in his professional basketball career. After a transitional season where Coach Gregg Popovich positioned him mainly to complement the team’s top draft pick, Victor Wembanyama, Collins has critical areas to refine to ensure his staying power with the franchise.
Last season saw Collins in the starting lineup as center, a strategic move by Coach Popovich aimed at optimizing Wembanyama’s impact at the power forward position. However, Collins experienced difficulties in this role, particularly with his shooting form, resulting in less effective offensive spacing. Compounding these troubles was Jeremy Sochan’s tentative stint at point guard, leading to an overall lack of offensive cohesion.
A subsequent lineup change that introduced Tre Jones and relegated Collins to the bench improved team dynamics, highlighting the need for a more dynamic power forward to pair with Wembanyama. Despite these early setbacks, Collins managed a commendable turnaround in his perimeter shooting later in the season, recording a 42% three-point shooting rate in the final months.
This shooting improvement is notable, but to truly solidify his position, Collins must address other aspects of his game. Last season, his averages of five rebounds per game and a 75% free-throw shooting rate were seen as underwhelming.
Given his physical attributes, standing 6’11″ with a 7’1″ wingspan, Collins is expected to be more dominant on the boards. Aiming for an average of eight rebounds per game could considerably boost his contribution and value to the team.
Similarly, enhancing his free-throw percentage back to around 80% could decisively solidify his role in the Spurs’ rotation.
Looking ahead, Collins’ contract, valued at $16 million next season and increasing to $18 million the following year, remains team-friendly but underscores the urgency for improvement. His performance in the upcoming season will be instrumental in determining his future with the Spurs. As the team continues to build around the promising Wembanyama, each player’s ability to efficiently contribute becomes increasingly crucial.
Collins holds the keys to his future with the Spurs. Improved rebounding and free-throw accuracy, coupled with sustained three-point shooting prowess, could fortify his role as a key rotational player.
Failure to progress could position him as a potential trade piece. Collins’ upcoming season is not just crucial for his career but pivotal for the Spurs’ ongoing restructuring efforts around their new star, Wembanyama.
