Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the National Bank Open in Montreal, citing a ‘very busy calendar’ as his reason.
The Serbian tennis star is currently representing his country at the Paris Olympics, where he recently triumphed over fellow legend Rafael Nadal in their 60th-ever encounter.

Djokovic took an early lead against Nadal at Roland Garros, though the Spaniard didn’t go down without a fight. The 38 year old managed to close the gap on the world No. 2 before Djokovic reasserted his dominance and won 6-1 6-4.
His advancement to the next round of the Olympics has led Djokovic to decide not to compete in Montreal, as he prioritises going for gold in Paris. The men’s singles final in Paris takes place just two days before the action kicks off in Canada, reports the Express.
In a statement on the tournament’s website, Djokovic said: “I’m disappointed to announce my withdrawal from the National Bank Open in Montreal.”
“I have a lot of great memories from Montreal, winning two titles there (and two others in Toronto). However, as I’m recovering from my injury in a very busy calendar this summer, I need to make hard choices.”
“I really hope I can return to Canada and Montreal in the coming years to play in front of their amazing fans.”
Tournament director Valerie Tetreault expressed understanding for Novak Djokovic’s decision to withdraw from the competition, despite the disappointment of his absence. He remarked: “While we’re disappointed that Novak [Djokovic] will be unable to take part in this year’s tournament, we understand his decision and wish him the best at the Olympics and the remainder of his season.”
Holding a record 24 Grand Slam titles, Djokovic has yet to clinch an Olympic gold medal. The Serbian ace secured a bronze in Beijing back in 2008 but finished fourth at both London 2012 and Tokyo 2020.
The tennis star was tipped for success at the Rio Olympics in 2016, yet he faced an unexpected first-round exit after being defeated by Juan Martin del Potro.
