Andrew McCarthy seemed to embarrass Whoopi Goldberg with an off-handed comment about age.

The actor made an appearance on The View to discuss his latest project, Brats, which explores the culture phenomenon of the Brat Pack — a group of actors bound together by the media in the 80s. While reflecting on a different era, he also explained how his age brought a new perspective to his work. Andrew said: “Well, I thought it would be good to do while we were still ambulatory. In that vain, I turned 60 last year and when you get old, and 60 is the beginning of old, you start to—”

The off-handed comment backfired as the camera panned to Whoopi who was pulling a strained expression. While the actress is 68, her co-panelist jumped with an attempt to save the day. “Well, you’re not 60, yet,” Joy Behar joked to her friend. To further gloss over the tension, she added: “I think a half century does it, too.”

The group moved on from the comment relatively quickly, allowing Andrew to finish explaining his point. He added: “My relationship with my past started to change. I looked back with more affection and things. The interesting part about the Brat Pack to me is I hated it at first and now I’ve come to realize it’s probably the biggest professional blessing of my life and how did my viewpoint on that change over the years… so I was interested in exploring that.”

Andrew’s documentary, Brats, reunited some of the iconic members of the actors, allowing them all space to add their own perspective to the story. Plus, members of the Brat Pack reunited at the Tribeca Film Festival red carpet ahead of the movie’s premiere. They admitted during the film that this wasn’t normal for them and, for 30 years, they weren’t really connected at all.

“Irony is that when the Brat Pack was sort of created it ended it in a kind of a way,” Andrew explained. Revisiting their expereinces, Andrew believes, brought them closer together. He added: “I think the warmest feeling I got from the whole thing was realizing how much affection we had for each other which that wasn’t necessarily the case back then, you know? Because we were young, we were scared, we were competitive.”

Seeming to backpedal to age, Joy added, “It’s one of the beauties of getting older.” Andrew agreed, claiming that the Brat Pack are “the avatars of youth for a certain generation.”
