300 will be getting a prequel series, courtesy of Warner Bros. Television. Zack Snyder, who directed the original feature film, may also be on board to direct.

Per Variety, a 300 television series is in early development. As of now, no plot details have been divulged, but the project would be a prequel, set before the events of the original movie. No writer has yet been named, and it’s not clear where the series would air or stream. However, Zack Snyder is reportedly in talks to direct the show.

Word is that deals are currently being negotiated for the series. Along with potentially directing, Snyder may also serve as executive producer alongside Deborah Snyder under their Stone Quarry banner with Wesley Coller. Original 300 producers Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, and Bernie Goldmann are reportedly in talks to return as well.

Released in 2006, 300 was directed by Zack Snyder, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kurt Johnstad and Michael B. Gordon. It is based on Frank Miller and Lynn Varley’s original story.

The movie starred Gerard Butler as King Leonidas, a ruler leading 300 Spartans into battle against the Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his more than 300,000 soldiers. The film also starred Lena Headey, David Wenham, Giovanni Cimmino, Dominic West, and Michael Fassbender. It was a box office hit, earning more than $456 million worldwide.

A sequel, 300: Rise of an Empire, was released in 2014. Snyder and Johnstad co-wrote the script, but Noam Murro directed the feature film, which is inspired by Miller’s Xerxes.

The film featured some returning stars, including Headey, Wenham, and Santoro, with other cast members including Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, and Jack O’Connell. The sequel was a hit at the box office, albeit not quite as much as the original, garnering more than $337 million.

The Future of the 300 Franchise

Snyder had plans at one point to develop another 300 sequel. The story, focusing on Alexander the Great, was meant to conclude the film trilogy. During the development of the script, the story was renamed Blood and Ashes, no longer intended to be a direct sequel to the previous 300 films.

The project was not greenlit by Warner Bros., but Snyder regained the rights in December 2023, now giving him the option to potentially make it elsewhere. It remains unclear if Snyder has since put any focus back into picking the project back up.
