New York Knicks guard Tyler Kolek has just begun his NBA journey, starting with his selection as the 34th overall pick last month, a pick that originally belonged to the Portland Trail Blazers before a trade sent him to New York. Despite being a second-round pick, expectations were high for the Marquette University graduate. However, the Knicks’ acquisition of veteran Cameron Payne has added to an overcrowded guard lineup.
For Kolek, the Summer League in Las Vegas offers a chance to shine away from the crowded Knicks’ backcourt. He made an impressive unofficial debut, scoring 21 points in the Knicks’ first summer game victory over Sacramento’s team. According to Newsday’s Steve Popper, Kolek relished the familiar competitive environment, saying, “I’ve played a lot of games. I’ve been in a lot of moments like that. It’s just being poised, being under control.”
Though he was pivotal in the Knicks’ close 106-105 win over Sacramento with a crucial three-point play, Kolek was critical of his own performance, especially upset about committing his first turnover of the league right at the beginning of the game. He stressed the need to improve despite not losing the ball in the Knicks’ later losses to Charlotte and Brooklyn.
Despite Kolek’s self-criticism, Knicks summer coach Dice Yoshimoto praised his floor game, noting his unselfishness and competitive spirit as qualities that make him a valuable player. Kolek, who ranks fourth in the Summer League with an average of 7.3 assists per game, has more opportunities to showcase his skills, including an upcoming game against the Detroit Pistons.
