The 2024 Paris summer Olympics are well under way by now but they have not been without some serious concerns, including today’s men’s 3000 meter steeplechase, where Ethiopian runner Lamecha Girma appeared to suffer a serious injury.

Girma was on the second to last straight away of the race when his back knee hit the hurdle bar, sending him head over heels into the track. Luckily, he landed shoulder first, but after that the impact was largely to his back and head. After the incident happened, he laid on the ground motionless until medical professionals came out onto the track to help him.

Understandably, everyone watching the race both in person and on television immediately became concerned for the athlete’s safety and wellbeing. Many fans of the games have gone online to show their support for him, with many praying that he makes a full recovery.

Peacock commentator Leigh Diffey, who was calling the race was shaken by the accident, calling it a first in his career.

«In 40 years of commentating running and the steeplechase, I have never seen a fall that heavy.»

After media professionals attended to Girma for a few moments on the track, they carried him off with a neck brace in place while he laid on a stretcher. It appeared as though he was still unconscious as they took him off the track.

Understandably, fans and spectators in general are now asking for updates on his status. While we want to respect Girma and his family’s privacy, the whole world will continue to worry about his condition until an official comment is released.
